“ What lies behind you and what lies in front of you, pales in comparison to what lies inside of you."
JD OAK is owned by the O in Oak. That O stands for Oshea. I am a dreamer/furniture maker with an eye for the beauty in wood. My heritage is rooted in the small caribbean island of Barbados where my carpenter grandfather and father are from. My father, a man who followed his purpose and became an Archbishop in the Baptist Ministry ended up with me and my family of 7 in the greater Boston area. With money tight and a church to lead, he used his creativity, skill and a genius wife to build what was necessary for church to run every Sunday. In a family so big there is a job for everyone. Mine was mostly “hold this”. But I watched and I learned. I took that creativity we’re all born with, and the few things I learned and inserted it into all things wood furniture. As a student of philosophy and of all cultures, my urge/calling to create was different than that of my father andpa. I believe the greatness of a tree and the beauty behind the bark is spiritual in its own way. Creating furniture and other objects to live with for me is bliss, challenging and a spiritual act all in one. It is truly a dream to create something awe inspiring. A reminder of natures great awesomeness.
“Family gives you the roots to stand tall and strong.”
My Family is everything to me, as I am sure yours is to you. JD OAK is literally my family. They are with me through everything. In my very humble beginnings my oldest son and daughter were by my side trying out stain for the first box I made. They ask questions and without knowing keep that creative fire ablaze. They’re the motivation for my work and my legacy. With every handcrafted design, no matter the client, I have family in mind. The memories shared at a dining table, night after night. The coffee table that serves as the centerpiece for a gathering and popcorn holder on movie night. The conversations and insights shared sitting in a handmade wooden chair. Furniture, in the moment can be an afterthought, to me they’re an integral piece of each memory. Well crafted furniture can enhance our space and thus our life. I approach each project, from a place of love and family.
